Buddha’s Sacred Tooth Relic
Since then, it has been referred to as the monarchs’ palladium. The Sacred Tooth Relic has been venerated and protected by kings and all Buddhists. In the past, kings have built temples for the Sacred Tooth Relic inside the Royal Palace, demonstrating their regard for it as a highly significant building in the local architectural landscape.
When the kingdoms were reorganised due to political upheaval, the Sacred Tooth Relic was transported from Anuradhapura to Polonnaruwa and thereafter to Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa, Kurunegala, Gampola, Kotte, and Kandy. The Sacred Tooth Relic was housed in specially built temples in these kingdoms. Since the time of King Vimaladharmasuriya of the Kandyan Kingdom, the Sacred Tooth Relic has been kept in a specially constructed
building, where it has stayed intact ever since. Over time, it was carefully furnished and preserved, becoming into a singular building of great significance.
