Colombo
The Western Province of Sri Lanka is home to Colombo, the country’s commercial hub. Numerous religious and ethnic groups have strong multicultural traditions in the Greater Colombo area. The city has the most up-to-date facilities in the globe. The city is home to the majority of five-star hotels, banks, airline offices, shopping malls, the harbour, and nightlife events.
The bulk of Sri Lanka’s international trade is conducted out of Colombo Harbour, one of the biggest artificial harbours in the world.
In the eighth century AD, Arab traders had established themselves close to the port’s location. The Portuguese, Dutch, and British built the port starting in the 16th century after they had already established themselves on the island’s beaches. The entire island was taken by the British in 1815, and Colombo was made the island’s capital. In 1948, Sri Lanka became an independent nation.
In 2012, the Colombo district had 2,309,809 residents. Thirteen local government authorities oversee 808 settlements.
