The ancient civilisations of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Ruhuna declined, primarily as a result of
repeated invasions by the South Indians. As a result, the royal capital moved to various locations, including
Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa, Gampola, Kurunegala, Kotte, Sitawaka, and Kandy. There were twenty-one
decentralised administrative entities within the Kandyan British administration at the time of the British
takeover of the Kandyan Kingdom in 1815. There were nine “Ratas,” eight “Disavas,” and four “Maha
Disavas” in all.
